Chevrolet Cruze achieves 5-Star crash test rating

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze earned five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), further building on the vehicle’s strong safety record in markets around the world.

• Cruze was tested under NHTSA’s new rating system, which was implemented this fall for the 2011 model year
• The new rating is based on more rigorous frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing
• Under the new system, these three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score”
• The Cruze is the first vehicle tested under NHTSA’s new rating system to achieve five stars in each of the individual crash impact conditions, leading to an Overall Vehicle Score of five stars – the highest rating possible

Safety Comes Standard
• The 2011 Cruze offers more standard safety features than any vehicle in its class
• Standard features include:
StabiliTrak® Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control
Antilock brakes
Panic Brake Assist and Enhanced Smart Pedal/Brake Override
OnStar with a 6-month Directions & Connections subscription
• In addition, Cruze is the first car in its class with 10 standard air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags, seat-mounted side-impact air bags and head-curtain side air bags in the frontand outboard rear seating positions, and front knee air bags – a first for the segment

NEW CHEVROLET CRUZE ECO ACHIEVES SEGMENT-LEADING 42 MPG ON THE HIGHWAY

Hybrid-Like Fuel Economy Starts at $18,895; Goes on Sale in January

The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.
Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”
The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge). It goes on sale in January.

To achieve its segment-leading fuel economy, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models.

“We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Russell. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”

Aero enhancementsAerodynamic improvements over non-Eco manual-transmission models contributed approximately 6 mpg to the Cruze’s EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway fuel economy. Many were developed and refined in more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing of the Chevy Volt, which shares a core architecture with the Cruze. Examples include the upper grille, which has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, a lowered ride height and underbody panels that smooth airflow beneath the car.

The Eco model also features an all-new technology in the compact segment: a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow. Another contributor to reduced drag is the use of ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires (used with lightweight wheels), which are also used on the Volt.

As a result of the aero enhancements, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model, with a coefficient of drag of 0.298. That places Cruze at the top of the class for mainstream compact cars.

Mass optimizationMore than 42 changes were made on the Eco to reduce weight. It weighs in at 3,009 pounds (1,365 kg), compared to the 3,223 pounds (1,462 kg) of the Cruze 1LT. The diet program for the Cruze challenged engineers to look at all aspects of the vehicle’s construction, including hundreds of weld flanges on the vehicle. They were reduced 1 mm to 2 mm in length, which saved several pounds, while the sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about 0.1 mm in select components. This saved weight while preserving structural integrity.

Lighter wheels and tires are used on the Eco. They’re stylish, polished 17-inch alloy units with Goodyear tires that weigh only 36.5 pounds (16.6 kg) apiece. That’s 5.3 pounds (2.4 kg) less than the 16-inch wheel/tires of the Cruze 1LT for a complete savings to the vehicle of 21.2 pounds (9.6 kg).

Efficient powertrainCruze Eco is powered by power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The transmission’s gearing is optimized for the model’s specific 17-inch wheel/tire combination and includes aggressive ratios for first and second gear coupled with a highly efficient, “taller” sixth-gear ratio for highway driving. That means engine rpm is reduced on the highway, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, with EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 26 city and 37 highway.

The Ecotec 1.4L turbo’s power ratings are 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility.

The engine also features premium design elements that give it world-class smoothness and durability while also contributing to the Cruze Eco’s lower curb weight. They include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold.
Comparing the competitorsAs a result of aerodynamic improvements, mass reduction and powertrain optimizaton, the Cruze Eco offers the best fuel economy in the compact segment, while delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the hybrid price. The following charts show how it compares with primary competitors and popular hybrids.

2011 Chevrolet Equinox near Mason City and Albert Lea

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox SUV and all our other new Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles.

2011 Chevrolet Equinox near Mason City, Iowa

The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox ranks 1 out of 24 Affordable Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on analysis of 23 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Equinox, and analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Chevrolet Equinox is a competent crossover that manages to offer fuel economy that rivals many mid-size sedans, the size of many mid-size SUVs and a starting price competitive with compact SUVs.

The Chevrolet Equinox continues to be an excellent choice for buyers shopping for a compact SUV. The Detroit News says, "Well priced, fuel efficient and nicely appointed, the Equinox sets a new benchmark for every automaker."

In terms of size, the Equinox is close to being a midsize SUV. However, when it comes to price and fuel economy, the Equinox is about as compact as they come. The Equinox only starts at about $1,000 more than affordable small SUV class favorites like the Honda CR-V, and it even gets better fuel economy. Because of its price and gas mileage, combined with a roomy interior, most reviewers say the Equinox is a good deal.

iPhone and iPad Camping App

AllStays.com has taken its iPhone camping app called "Camp & RV" and rebuilt it to be a universal app for one price for all iOS devices. The new version adds a state and city manual search that works offline. The advantage of this is that even if travelers don't have Internet service in the middle of a dense forest, they can still look ahead for camping options in another city on your trip.

Each location in the app has a detail view that includes a map, directions, phone number, a link to the official website and an easy way to report errors or make corrections.

If campers are looking for something specific like state parks or National Forest or independently owned campgrounds, they can select to view only those on both the map view and the manual view. The app includes many filters for all kinds of camping along with various truck stops, outdoor sporting goods and supplies stores, rest areas, RV dealers, overnight parking spots, low clearance locations and some others. It also includes mapping and user reports for which Walmart stores allow overnight parking for RVs and which do not.

"We had many requests to make Camp & RV available as a native app for the iPad," says Adam Longfellow, the owner of travel website AllStays.com. "So using the high-resolution, larger screen and full rotation capabilities of the iPad became a high priority. We listen closely to customer feedback. Almost every change we make is driven by user requests and suggestions."

When asked when the app would be available on Android devices, Adam said, "We want to try to support as many devices as possible and get our unique way of looking at and presenting camping information out to as many people as possible. The Android version will be released in the fall of 2010."

AllStays.com, based in the state of New Mexico, lists all kinds of lodging, from primitive campgrounds and RV parks to luxury hotels and spa resorts. AllStays also links directly to official websites to make sure you have the real scoop on the latest and most accurate information.

2011 Buick Enclave in North Iowa

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the all-new 2011 Buick Enclave SUV and all our other new Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles.

2011 Buick Enclave near Mason City, Iowa

The 2011 Buick Enclave ranks 1 out of 23 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on an analysis of 52 published reviews and test drives of the Buick Enclave, and an analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2011 Buick Enclave's upscale interior, smooth ride and stylish looks put it almost on par with some luxury SUVs, but don’t expect it to handle like a car.

The Enclave shares a platform with the popular Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia, but commands a price premium over both. Starting at just over $35,000, it’s actually one of the more expensive options among Affordable Midsize SUVs. But most luxury-minded buyers will find that it’s worth it.

The Enclave features one of the most luxurious and quiet interiors in its class. That, plus seating for seven makes it a practical family hauler. "This crossover builds on the strengths of its more mainstream cousins by offering tangible upgrades in luxury and style,” explains Consumer Guide. In fact, Buick likens the experience of sitting in an Enclave to a private jet.

2011 GMC Acadia near Clear Lake, Iowa

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the all-new 2011 GMC Acadia and all our other new Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles.

2011 GMC Acadia in North Iowa

For years, building tough trucks for tough work has been the focus of GMC, General Motors' truck division. But even GMC couldn't avoid the onslaught of the crossover SUV revolution. That's where the 2011 GMC Acadia comes in.

The 2011 GMC Acadia is a large crossover SUV. Mechanically, it's very similar to its platform-mates -- the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and now-discontinued Saturn Outlook. Thanks to its spacious interior, strong V6 engine and competitive price, the 2011 GMC Acadia is one of the better crossover SUV choices.

The 2011 GMC Acadia is one of the roomiest crossover utility vehicles in its class, with seating for up to eight passengers. The second-row seats are captain's chairs, but a 60/40-split-folding bench is available as an option. The second-row seats also slide 4 inches fore and aft and easily flip up and out of the way for access to the third-row seats. Behind the third row, there is a respectable amount of luggage room.

The 2011 GMC Acadia comes in four trims: SL, SLE, SLT-1 and SLT-2. Each comes with a direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of churning out 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Standard features include cruise control, full power accessories, front and rear air-conditioning and a full array of airbags. The SLE's additional highlights include a power liftgate, remote ignition, rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. The SLT-1 and SLT-2 trims add features that include leather seating, heated front seats, tri-zone climate control and a 10-speaker Bose audio system with a six-CD in-dash changer and USB audio connection.

2011 Buick LaCrosse near Mason City, Iowa

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the all-new 2011 Buick LaCrosse and all our other new Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles.

2011 Buick LaCrosse

The 2011 Buick LaCrosse will see many of its features carry on unchanged, but will receive one major change: the 3.0-liter V6 engine will be dropped in favor of a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The 3.6-liter V6 engine will remain. This vehicle is designed to seat up to five passengers, and will be offered in three trim levels: CX, CXL, and CXS. The CX and CXL models are likely to continue to be offered in front or all-wheel drive, and although many options will remain the same, there may be some small changes to features and trim levels.

The Buick LaCrosse had its exterior redesigned for the 2010 model year, and the 2011 Buick LaCrosse does not have many changes. Its exterior is edgier and sportier than in previous generations. The base model should have basic exterior features like halogen headlights and daytime running lights. Upgraded trims and options are included: heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, foglamps, rear parking sensors, adaptive xenon headlights, and adjustable shock absorbers.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu near Mason City, Iowa

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Malibu and all our other new Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu

Malibu's world-class design and superb level of craftsmanship have earned the respect of people who know cars. You'll be impressed by the nearly microscopic gaps - many as tight as 1mm — in the interior fit and finish. 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in North Iowa

Visit Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City, Iowa, to see the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Silverados.

Sure, Silverado can help construct roads and bridges. Front porches and back decks. Things that matter. Things that last. But the most important thing Chevy has built over the last 90 years is a bond with truck owners. A commitment to giving them what they need so they can do what needs to get done. It's no wonder Cars.com named it a 2010 "Best Bet." Silverado. The most dependable, longest-lasting full-size pickups on the road.

Every proven Vortec V8 engine available on Silverado is capable of generating over 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. Or step up to the available Vortec 6.2L V8 that generates 403 horses and 417 lb.-ft. of torque, making Silverado the most powerful half-ton crew cab.

Not surprisingly, all that power is complemented by a lot of payload capability - 1,980 lbs. for Crew Cab and 1,925 lbs. for Extended Cab models with the available MAX Trailering Pack.

Whether you live in Mason City, Clear Lake, Garner, Lake Mills, Albert Lea, or any other town in North Iowa or Southern Minnesota, Lichtsinn Motors in Forest City is the place to find your next 2011 Chevy Silverado!

Lichtsinn Motors donates $1,300 to Forest City Community School District

Forest City, Iowa - Lichtsinn Motors of Forest City recently donated $1,300 to the Forest City Community School District as part of their We Care Charitable Giving program.

The We Care plan was started in October 2009 and provides that Lichtsinn Motors will donate $50 to the customer's choice of one of five pre-selected organizations for each new or pre-owned car or truck purchased at the Forest City dealership.

"The We Care Program allows us to direct our giving funds to those organizations that our customers tell us are important to them," said Ron Lichtsinn, owner of Lichtsinn Motors. "Since myself and many Lichtsinn Motors employees graduated from Forest City, we are especially proud to make this contribution in order to provide educational opportunities to our local youth." The funds will be used at the school's discretion.

The five We Care organizations for 2009-2010 are: The American Cancer Society, HOSPICE of North Iowa, the Forest City Community School District, the Forest City Chamber of Commerce/Economic Development, and Bear Creek Golf Course. In addition, each customer has the opportunity to nominate other organizations for consideration for the following year's list. Organizations have the opportunity to submit an application to be part of the next year's list as well.

Customers purchasing a new or pre-owned car, van, SUV or truck retailing over $5,000 are able to select the organization which they would like their $50 donation to go to. This is an ongoing dealership program and donations will be made to the organizations annually through this program.

Consumer Reports on the Buick Regal

“The 2011 Buick Regal marks a dramatic change from the Regals of yore,” writes Consumer Reportsin a favorable review.

It continued:Driving Impressions: “The Regal comes across as a solid, refined, and agile sedan. Handling is impressively taut and responsive, frisky and alert in corners. The ride is firm yet supple, providing good isolation despite the 18-inch wheels. The cabin is quiet, with strikingly little wind noise at high speeds.

“The 182-hp, 2.4-liter, four cylinder engine is the same direct-injection unit that drives the Chevy Equinox but it sounds more civilized in this car. The smooth and responsive six speed automatic makes the most of the engine's power. Some of us wanted more power. GM's plans call for a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, good for 220 hp, to be added in a few months, rather than a V6. We've tried it and it suits the car very well.”

Inside the Cabin: The compact interior is well finished and has many soft-touch, high quality plastics in the dash and door trim. The front seats are well shaped and very supportive, reminiscent of those used by Audi and BMW. Most switchgear is familiar from other GM products, but the radio controls are a bit confusing and the optional navigation system has a fussy center controller knob. Rear-seat room is tighter than in most family sedans but similar to the TSX and A4. The trunk is large and nicely finished, with hinges that don't crush your luggage. Folding the split rear seatbacks allows for carrying long objects.”

CR's Take: “The Regal comes across as a very slick and pleasant car that's rewarding to drive. Whether or not the public is ready for a Euro-style Buick remains to be seen.”

GM Supports Annual Drunk Driving Prevention Enforcement Campaign

GM salutes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), law enforcement agencies, state traffic safety offices and others who are mobilizing during the last days of summer to save lives.

Sadly, drunk driving is still the cause of about one-third of highway fatalities. High-visibility law enforcement campaigns like "Over the Limit. Under Arrest." are proven, effective means to prevent tragedies and change behaviors.

Through the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, GM also supports MADD's Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving which includes increased drunk driving enforcement as one of the key elements of the Campaign. The annual national law enforcement crackdown -- "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest" -- runs from Aug. 20 through Sept. 6.

This high-visibility enforcement mobilization, similar to successful efforts to increase seat belt use, is supported by $31 million in national and state advertisements, according to NHTSA. The national ads are targeted at young male drivers and motorcycle riders. NHTSA's key messages for the crackdown are: Impaired driving is a deadly crime that is still prevalent throughout the country and is especially common among young males 21 to 34 years old; and, police in every state and most U.S. towns and cities will be out in record numbers from mid-August through Labor Day to prevent alcohol-impaired driving.

GMC Provides Consumer Tips for On Board Pet Safety

Parents and caregivers pay close attention to a child’s safety while traveling in a vehicle. Our pets need the same on board care.

On Friday, at the BarkWorld Expo in Atlanta, GMC partnered with Safe Kids USA, the Atlanta Humane Society and PETCO to provide hands-on pet safety tips and demonstrations on safely securing a pet while traveling along with cautions to avoid leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle.
The GMC Acadia and Terrain are known for their family-friendly safety features that offer customers high-tech tools to help provide a safe and convenient drive for all passengers, including pets. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association nearly half of all pet owners consider their furry friend to be part of their family, which is why GMC pays attention to pets needs when developing user-friendly features.

“We know that nearly 40 percent of utility buyers are using their vehicles to transport their pets on a weekly basis, and we think that the vehicles in the GMC portfolio offer the tools that our customers need to safely travel with their four-legged friends,” said GMC Marketing Manager Hugh Milne.

“For example the GMC Terrain and Acadia are great family and pet-friendly vehicles with safety and technology features including remote power rear lift gate, second row smart slide seating system, bench seats that allow room to secure a crate for your pet and the safety and security of OnStar.”

The Atlanta Humane Society says most pet owners fail to properly secure their pets, and they can become “living projectiles” when drivers stop suddenly. An animal can seriously injure or kill a passenger and be hurt or killed itself – even at low speeds.
“While there is no one foolproof way to secure a pet to completely escape injury, just about any method is preferable to pets being loose,” said Mailey E. McLaughlin, M.Ed., Atlanta Humane Society Behavior and Training Coordinator. “A properly sized crate or kennel secured behind the back seat in an SUV is generally best, followed by a crate secured behind a different seat, or wedged between non-moving features. A secured or unsecured crate in an open area can shatter and send debris (and the pet inside) flying.”

If crating is not feasible, McLaughlin recommends securing a pet with a sturdy safety travel harness with metal buckles (or no buckles) with wide, padded straps that run across the shoulders and chest, not around the neck.

Just as important as proper securing of pets is knowing when they should not be in a vehicle. According to Safe Kids USA, the temperature inside a closed vehicle can become dangerously hot in just minutes – even when temperatures outside are mild. A child or pet’s body temperature can rise three to five times faster than an adults and can result in heatstroke or death. Through mid-August, at least 35 children in the United States had died from hyperthermia in 2010 from being left unattended or playing in a vehicle and being overcome by heat.
“Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle – not even for a minute,” said Wes Bender of Safe Kids USA. “This can result in life-threatening temperatures inside the vehicle, even with the windows slightly open. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can become dangerously hot in just minutes, even when temperatures outside are mild.”

For pets, Safe Kids recommends taking your pet with you when you exit the car or leave it at home where it will be spared the heat.

Safety travel pet harnesses and crates used during the demonstration were donated by PETCO.
The Terrain offers a best-in-segment EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 32 miles per gallon, and to meet customer demand production has been increased three times since it went on sale in late 2009.

GM Brands Earn Big Awards from JD Power!

In the 2010 JD Power IQS results there are some significant wins for GM’s brands and manufacturing plants. GM has 10 models ranking in the top three in their segments for quality performance in the first 90 days of ownership.

GM received four awards, double the number in 2009. Chevrolet Tahoe and Avalanche, GMC Sierra 1500 and Cadillac Escalade were segment winners.

GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly - home of the Cadillac CTS family and STS - was awarded the study’s Bronze Plant Award in the North/South America region, and was the top-ranking plant in the United States.

Vehicle segment wins for the Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models support the quality improvement trend seen in internal evaluations, which show that, since 2007, GM has reduced warranty repairs by 45 percent per vehicle in North America.

The Chevrolet and Cadillac brands scored 111 PPH (2 below industry average) while Buick improved slightly to 114 PPH. GMC finished at 126 PPH.

“We have a plan to be segment leaders in every market and segment in which we compete by 2012, and we’re on track to achieve that goal,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president of Global Quality. “While we celebrate these wins, we realize that our overall quality performance is not where it needs to be. We understand what we need to improve, especially with regard to new vehicle launches,” he said.

Nicholson continued: “Delivering top-quality vehicles for our customers is our overriding priority. Our entire team is committed to improving our vehicles, and we never lose sight of the fact that the competition is also moving fast. Congratulations to the GM team on the progress made so far. We all have a role to play in keeping quality as a top priority as we design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles.”

The 2010 IQS is based on responses from more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 228-question survey designed to provide manufacturers with information to quickly identify design-related problems, defects and malfunctions.
