Lichtsinn Motors encourages local area students to apply for the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program

Lichtsinn Motors is dedicated to empowering and encouraging North Iowa students to pursue higher education to become the next generation of leaders. To recognize and reward North Iowa college-bound students, Buick, the General Motors Foundation and Lichtsinn Motors announced the $4.5 million-a-year Buick Achievers Scholarship Program.

"As a leading business in the community we feel it is necessary to be actively involved in the community and to inspire students in North Iowa and Southern Minnesota," said Ron Lichtsinn of Lichtsinn Motors. "We know that every dollar makes a difference to students paying college tuition, and the Buick Achievers scholarship is an excellent program that helps foster the next generation of North Iowa area leaders."

Buick Achievers, designed to inspire, celebrate, and enable human achievement, will provide 100 outstanding students, in the United States, who major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics up to $25,000 a year, for up to four years. Other qualifying majors are design, marketing and business administration.

The program will also provide 1,000 students with $2,000 scholarships, also renewable for up to four years.

To be eligible for the Buick Achievers scholarship, applicants must also be high school seniors or high school graduates who would be first-time college students in the fall of 2011; plan to enroll full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2011-12 academic year; and demonstrate an interest in the automotive industry. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have permanent residence in the United States.

Information and applications are available at buickachievers.com. Application will be accepted until March 31, 2011, and scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-12 academic year.

The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program is the latest example of GM Foundation education initiatives to invest in the youth of America. The GM Foundation has provided more than $26 million in education-related initiatives since 2005.

Iowa Ranked #1 for Children's Healthcare

Congratulations and thanks to all Iowa businesses and families for this accomplishment!

Iowa ranked #1 in the Scorecard on Child Health, by the Commonwealth Fund. The State Scorecard on Child Health System Performance examines states' performance on 20 key indicators of children's health care access, affordability of care, prevention and treatment, the potential to lead healthy lives, and health system equity.

Children living in the five top-ranked states - Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire - are more likely to be insured and to receive recommended medical and dental check-ups than other children

The analysis finds wide variation in performance across states. If all states achieved benchmark performance levels, 5 million more children would be insured, 10 million more would receive at least one medical and dental preventive care visit annually, and nearly 9 million more would have a medical home.

The findings demonstrate that federal and state policy actions maintained and, in some cases, expanded children's insurance coverage during the recent recession, even as many parents lost coverage. The report also highlights the need for initiatives specifically focused on improving health system performance for children. The report includes state-by-state insurance coverage projections for children once relevant provisions of the Affordable Health Act are implemented.
